If you’re planning a wedding (or any kind of life celebration), you may have come across the term celebrant – and perhaps you’re wondering, “What exactly does a celebrant do?”
Let’s clear that up!
A celebrant creates personalised, meaningful ceremonies.
Put simply, a celebrant is someone who designs and delivers bespoke ceremonies that reflect the personalities, values, and stories of the people involved. Whether it’s a wedding, vow renewal, naming ceremony, or celebration of life, a celebrant works closely with you to craft something unique.
As a celebrant, I don’t follow a script. Instead, I get to know you and your story, and together we create a ceremony that feels just right – full of warmth, fun, authenticity, and meaning.
This is a common question, especially here in the UK. Here’s a quick comparison:
• A registrar works for the local authority and is responsible for the legal registration of marriages. Their ceremonies tend to be quite short and follow a set script. They’re usually held at a registry office or licensed venue.
• A celebrant (like me!) is not restricted by legal wording or formalities. I can conduct ceremonies in any location – a woodland, a garden, a lakeside – and we can include whatever readings, rituals, music, or personal touches you like.
It’s important note that, in England and Wales, a celebrant-led ceremony is not legally binding (yet!). Most couples do the legal bit separately at a registry office, then have the ceremony they really want with their celebrant.
Celebrant vs. Religious Officiant
• A Religious Officiant typically conducts ceremonies in a place of worship and is authorised (often by their religious organisation) to conduct legally binding marriages. Their ceremonies are rooted in religious traditions and include wording, vows, and rituals that reflect the faith and values of the couple.
• A celebrant-led ceremony is non-religious by default, but if you wish, we can include spiritual, cultural, or symbolic elements that are meaningful to you. I work with people from all backgrounds, beliefs, and traditions, and I’m happy to help weave in any customs or rituals that reflect what matters most to you.
As your celebrant, I will:
• Meet with you (in person or virtually) to get to know you and chat through your ideas
• Create a completely bespoke ceremony script that’s written just for you
• Offer guidance on things like vows, readings, music, and symbolic elements
• Conduct your ceremony on the day, ensuring it flows beautifully and reflects your story
• Support you every step of the way, so you feel confident and excited about your big moment. We may even have a rehearsal if you would like one.
Why Choose a Celebrant?
If you want a ceremony that’s personal, heartfelt, and a true reflection of you – a celebrant-led ceremony is a brilliant choice. It gives you the freedom to celebrate your love, your way.
