Readings and Poems for Your Ceremony

Words That Truly Speak to You

As a key ingredient of your special day, readings and poems that are heartfelt and meaningful can add a sprinkle of magic to your celebrant-led wedding ceremony. They offer a beautiful way to personalise this poignant moment in your lives and give your guests a deeper insight into who you are as a couple. But with so many choices out there, it can feel overwhelming to choose something that truly resonates. Here are a few thought-provoking suggestions on how to find readings that feel just right for you.

1. START WITH YOUR STORY

Before you start doing any research, take a step back and think about your journey together:
• What moments define your relationship?
• What values or passions do you both hold dear?
• Are there quotes, films, books, or songs that already mean something to you as a couple?
Sometimes, the most heartfelt readings come not from literature, but from your life. Maybe it’s a favourite passage from a book you read together on holiday, or the lyrics from a song you danced to in your kitchen. Great readings don’t have to be traditional, they just have to be meaningful to you.

2. DECIDE ON THE MOOD YOU WANT TO CREATE

Do you want your ceremony to feel romantic and poetic? Light-hearted and humorous? Spiritual or deeply emotional?
Knowing the tone you’re aiming for will help narrow your search. For example:
• Romantic & Timeless: Think Shakespeare, Rumi, or Pablo Neruda.
• Playful & Modern: Consider quotes from films like ‘When Harry Met Sally’ or ‘The Princess Bride’, or humorous pieces like “A Lovely Love Story” by Edward Monkton. Maybe a Pam Ayres poem would work if you are not sentimental.
• Unique & Personal: Extracts from love letters, journal entries can bring something truly one-of-a-kind. How about or something meaningful from a close friend or relative? Perhaps they would like to write a piece especially for you.
My particular favourite is ‘The Giraffe and the Monkey’ by Daniel Thompson. When I last read this poem, I personalised it with the names of the couple to create a moment that was both touching and tear-jerking in equal measure.

3. KEEP PRACTICALITIES IN MIND

• Length: Aim for readings that are around 1–2 minutes long. Short and sweet can be more impactful than something lengthy.
• Reader Confidence: If someone else is reading it, choose something they’ll be comfortable and confident reading aloud.
• Language & Tone: Make sure the chosen words suit your relationship and the tone of your ceremony (for example, not too religious if your ceremony is secular).

Final Thoughts

Your wedding ceremony should sound and feel like ‘you’. Don’t worry about what’s “supposed” to be read. Choose words that make you smile, cry, or laugh out loud. The right readings will help to make your ceremony truly unforgettable. If you’re unsure which ones to pick, consider choosing one serious and one light-hearted. It creates a lovely balance that reflects the many layers of love and partnerships.
